Invention - All Pats Pending
Parry:Matthews have organised another.
So welcome back My friends
The Valentine My Space Party 2007.
Held once again in the St. James Memorial Hall. Now known by musicians across the West as the Invention Studio's
Fellow muso Pete Morley, and myself arrived in good time. We went straight to the Lamb & Lion for a pie and Pint(s) and to watch Reading Reserves eek out a draw with Man. Utd. in the FA Cup.
suitable refreshed we headed across the road to the Venue.
All ready in full swing.
So with apologies to Stench Limbosa, we went to the crypt first where Anna Parry & Erica Crawford were doing an acoustic set. They were joined by Rob Phillips who's set included 'Freedom' is a beautifully crafted number. And 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' the Nirvana classic.
It was then it was back up the narrow staircase to see four young lads from Glastonbury. Namely Tijuana. their set was full of energy and enthusiasm. The blurb on them states their influences being Red Hot Chilli's and Rage against the Machine. You could tell.
And I'm not really a fan of either of those bands, but I could see these guys again. Miguel Santana had a stage presence belying his geekish schoolboy looks.
Next up on the main stage were the band that were the main reason Pete and myself had travelled to Bath.....
Parry:Mathews
They only played 6 songs, but each one was pure quality.
With a screen backdrop projecting various images.
The set was...........
1. In Deep/Aqua
The chanting and Drums of In Deep, segued into the chanting
and Guitar of Aqua
2. Do Ya Love Me?
With it's haunting rhythm, it just washes over you.
3.Smiling
A new song from the pen of Si Matthews
4.Let It Hurt
5. Where the Music used to be
These two anthems to me define what a great band they are.
Anna's strong vocals fit perfectly to the guitar's played by Si and Rob along with Erica's backing vocals. Not forgetting bass player Neil Swift and drummer Tom Hammond
6 The State I'm In
Another well crafted new song.
One day I'll see a Full set. I don't think I'll tire of this band. As long as they don't tire of me.
The set over, it was time to move downstairs. Almost perfect timing.
The Little Girl Blues was in mid set.
I love this girl. Accompanied beautifully by electric Cello, Leanne Walsh's powerful lyrics, and gentle guitar playing, can tug at the heart strings. And it was lovely to chat afterwards.
I should also praise Dizzy Drummer, who worked tirelessly through the evening acting as Compère again. As she had in the previous Bash and also adding her unique touches to the acoustic acts on her Toms
Before the next loud set upstairs, I took my leave outside for the customary smoke. Only to be admonished by Stench Limbosa and
Tessa Bickers for missing their sets.
Wow The Girls are on next. Don't get too excited gents.
Well maybe do. Four guys who Rock.
Sledgehammer Grunge Rock that is, with a hint of reggae.
Powerful stuff.
The night was closed by a storming set by Fortune Drive Funky stuff, from a polished very tight bunch of guys. It was a spell binding performance that had everybody dancing.
The evening was at an end and everyone made their weary bodies home after some wonderful sounds. All in admiration of Si Matthews and Anna Parry for organising the party.
It was their invention. At the Invention Studio's.
I think you've got the patent folks.
And they are planning another in April.
A double header. two nights of superb My Space Musicians.
I can't wait.
As you've guessed all the music can be found on My Space. Click my links, Enjoy, and we'll see you Where the Music ought to be.
