Thank You, Miss. Unthank

Rachel Unthank
& The Winterset,
The Brewhouse,
Taunton
21 Feb.

If you've come across my Blog before, you should know from previous entries that I'm looking forward to the
Trowbridge Village Pump Festival.
So I was mega pleased to see that my local theatre was having
a series of Folk evenings.
The first being on Tuesday night.
Rachel Unthank is receiving critical acclaim at the moment
for her Debut Album "Cruel Sister" and she and her group are currently in the middle of their first tour.

The girls, sisters Rachel & Becky Unthank, with Jackie Oates, (Viola) and Belinda O'Hooley,(Piano) arrived on stage at to generous applause from a small, but appreciative audience,
The instruments used sparingly, giving the voice centre stage.
We were given a mixture of Sea Songs, Reels and Traditional & Contemporary folk music. plus Clog Dancing. And although it is Rachel's voice that is getting the plaudits. All four girls took their turns singing lead.

There were a couple of hitches during the set, Rachel's Cello not being in tune, and Becky getting in a mix up over mike stands, plus a couple of silences where the they forgot what was next.
But I can forgive them that.
The music was a joy.

The Set.
On a Monday Morning
Blackbird
Fair Rosamund
My Donald ( Becky solo)
My Bonnie Lad ( I think?)
Raven Girl ( brilliant acapella)
A NorthEast Lullaby ( title not caught)
River Man (Nick Drake)
Stooking
2 reels ( Rachel & Becky clog dancing)
-----------------------------------
John Dead
(missed)
Cruel Ships Carpenter
The lily/Icbod (Jackie centre stage/ more clog dancing)
For Today I am a Buoy (Anthony and the Johnsons)
20 Long Weeks
Tar-barrel in dale ( audience participation required)
The Unst Boat Song
Cold and Stiff ( Belinda's own)
Troubled Waters

there were 3 numbers in the
Encore but I unfortunately missed the titles

The two sisters have lovely Gordie accents,
which give a wonderful feel to their songs,
along with larger than life Belinda & the music/ vocals of Jackie
This quartet is set to go far.
Get the Album, Go and see them. They're Good
